There is something pre-existing, born before Heaven and Earth. Silent and hollow, standing alone without change, pervasive yet never ceasing, it can be the mother of all things under Heaven. I do not know its name; I forcefully call it the Dao, and forcefully name it the Great. The Great flows away, flowing away becomes distant, distant becomes returning. Therefore, the Dao is great, Heaven is great, Earth is great, and humanity is also great. Within the realm there are four greats, and humanity is one of them. Humanity follows Earth, Earth follows Heaven, Heaven follows the Dao, and the Dao follows Nature.
