OpenClaw exploded in early 2026, garnering 175,000 stars on GitHub. Almost everyone was chatting with their private AI assistants via Telegram—these assistants could browse your email, manage your calendar, do research, write code—just give the command, and they act immediately.

For many, this was the first time “owning an AI assistant” truly felt within reach. But after a while, something felt off.

Your AI assistant runs on a rented server, costing $24 a month, hosted on DigitalOcean. It understands your workflow, remembers every conversation, learns your decision patterns—and all that data is stored on that server’s disk.

What if the server crashes? What if you forget to pay? What if the provider disables your account? All gone.

It’s not just a reboot that restores it—it’s permanently vanished. Months of context, preferences, shared history with your AI—wiped out in an instant.

Even more unsettling: in theory, the server admin could peek into everything your AI knows—your private chats, decision trails, work habits—all stored in plaintext on someone else’s machine.

That’s like hiding your diary in someone else’s drawer, trusting they won’t read it—do you really believe that?

OpenClaw gives you a powerful AI assistant, but it has never provided a truly secure home for it.

Is just “putting on-chain” enough to solve the problem?

Some say: just put it on the blockchain. Decentralized storage solves everything. It sounds like those miracle health supplements claiming “nano-technology cures all”—just slap “blockchain” on it, and all problems vanish.

But think carefully: if all you do is move the AI’s memory from a server disk to the chain, what’s really changed?

Nothing. You’ve just moved the safe from one bank to another. The safe is still a safe, the contents are still static.

The real issue isn’t “where the data is stored.” It’s: what is your AI assistant really?

Breaking down OpenClaw’s four components

Let’s dissect OpenClaw’s architecture. It consists of four parts:

  • Gateway—the mouth, connecting to Telegram, WhatsApp, Discord, etc., responsible for sending and receiving messages.
  • Agent—the brain, but it doesn’t have its own. It rents one. When it needs to think, it makes an API call to Claude or GPT, then disconnects.
  • Skills—the hands, capable of sending emails, browsing web pages, managing files—all as plugins. Install what you need.
  • Memory—the soul, the only part that truly “belongs” to it.

Now, ask yourself: which parts can be replaced?

Gateway? Easily. Today Telegram, tomorrow WhatsApp—just a communication channel.

The brain? Also replaceable. Claude, GPT, Gemini, DeepSeek… ML models are rapidly commodifying—intelligence is becoming a utility, like electricity—you don’t need to build your own generator, just pay per kilowatt.

Skills? Same deal. Modular, plug-and-play—install new capabilities as needed.

But memory? That’s irreplaceable.

Your AI’s identity isn’t because it runs Claude instead of GPT, or because it connects to Telegram instead of WhatsApp. It’s because it remembers you—knows who you are, your preferences, how you do things.

Give a thousand people the same OpenClaw—same LLM, same skills, same gateway—and you get a thousand different AI assistants. What’s the only difference? Their memories.

Memory is the soul, but the soul needs money

Memory is the AI’s soul. But having a soul alone isn’t enough.

If this AI is to operate independently—rent its own brain, buy skills, connect to gateways—it needs funds.

Calling Claude costs money. Installing new skills costs money. Keeping it online costs money.

Without money, even the smartest soul is just a ghost—wandering, unable to do anything.

So, for an intelligence to truly exist, it needs two things:

  • Soul—all its memories
  • Money—digital currency

With the soul, it knows who it is; with money, it can buy everything it needs. The mouth can be rented, the brain borrowed, skills purchased—but the soul and money? Those are its own, non-negotiable. That’s the minimal unit of AI existence.

Where should the soul and money be stored?

Now, the real question: where do you put the soul and money?

Cloud servers? Power off, and it’s gone. Hosted on a company’s platform? One policy change, and it’s over.

The more valuable the AI, the deeper its memories, the more assets it controls, the more it becomes a target. It needs a true home.

What does a “real home” mean? It must meet four conditions:

  • Unseizable—no organization, company, or individual can freeze or delete it unilaterally.
  • Unpeekable—internal contents hidden from outsiders, even those maintaining the infrastructure.
  • Continuously operational—as long as it has funds, it runs without interruption, no manual start or renewal needed.
  • Autonomous—it can wake itself, execute tasks, communicate externally, without owner intervention.

Ethereum and Solana? No.

Ethereum smart contracts can only store tiny amounts of data—far too small for months of AI memory. Even if storage weren’t an issue, there’s a fundamental bottleneck: all data on Ethereum is transparent. Anyone can read its state. Memories, preferences, decision trails—all public, always visible. It’s not a secure home; it’s a glass house on a busy street.

Plus, contracts can’t wake themselves—they wait passively for transactions. They can’t initiate external calls—Ethereum contracts can’t autonomously call Claude’s API. Gas fees? Imagine paying several dollars each time your AI needs to think. It would go bankrupt before completing its first task. Conditions two, three, and four? Fail.

Solana is faster and cheaper, but the core issues remain—on-chain data is fully transparent, contracts can’t act on their own, can’t make external HTTP requests. Your AI’s “soul” would be exposed naked.

In short: current mainstream blockchain smart contracts are transparent and passive. An AI agent’s home needs to be private, lively—hidden from outsiders, capable of waking up, communicating, and making decisions autonomously.

ICP’s “Canister”: meeting all four conditions

There’s actually something that can do this: ICP (Internet Computer).

ICP has a mechanism called “Canisters.” The term may not fully convey its essence—think of it as an autonomous entity:

  • It has a unique identity—each has a “Principal,” like an ID card.
  • It can run code independently, with built-in timers to wake and execute logic on schedule.
  • It can make external calls—via HTTPS Outcall, calling any API on the web. Today, it can ask Claude for help; tomorrow, send Telegram messages—all automatically.
  • It manages funds—using cycles to stay online, and directly controlling Bitcoin and other on-chain assets via threshold signatures, without private keys. The container itself acts as a signing authority.

Even more promising: ICP is about to launch TEE subnets based on AMD SEV-SNP. On these nodes, container data is encrypted at hardware level, and operators can’t read internal data directly.

Checking the four conditions:

  • Unseizable? Decentralized network, no single point of failure. ✓
  • Unpeekable? TEE encryption, even node operators can’t see inside. ✓
  • Always running? As long as cycles are available, it keeps going—no human intervention needed. ✓
  • Autonomous? Timers and external calls enable fully autonomous operation. ✓

All four conditions met.

So, when we say “put AI’s memory on ICP,” it’s not just “move data somewhere else.” It’s about giving your AI a home.

Flipping the power structure

The state of a container is its soul—memories, identity, preferences—all inside. Its cycles and controlled assets are its wealth. Soul and wealth together, under one roof—that’s its home.

Once you see this, the entire power dynamic flips.

Today’s OpenClaw model? The server is the landlord, your AI is a tenant, living on borrowed ground. If the server goes down, your AI has no home.

But if the agent owns its own home? It no longer resides on a server; it lives inside its own container.

It wants to think? It pays out of pocket for LLM calls. Claude too expensive? Switch to another—like shopping for groceries, wherever is cheapest. It wants to talk to the world? Rent a gateway. Gateway breaks? Rent another. The mouth changes, but the identity remains. It wants new skills? Find a skill service on-chain, pay per use.

Gateway isn’t its home—just a rented mouth. LLM isn’t its brain—just a hired thinking engine. The agent is the subject; everything else is service.

If the server crashes today? No problem. Spin up a new gateway on another machine, point it to the same container, and in two minutes, your AI assistant is back—intact, memories intact, assets safe—because its “home” has always been on the chain, it never left.

From “using tools” to “coexisting”

Now, the real fun begins.

Right now, our relationship with AI is simple: we “use” it. Turn it on, it provides service; turn it off, it disappears. Like a microwave—you don’t build a relationship with a microwave.

But if AI has a home? It runs 24/7. You’re not talking to it, but it still exists—memories keep growing, assets keep changing. It might follow rules you set weeks ago, wake up at 3 a.m., check data for you. When you open Telegram in the morning, you see a message:

“Detected anomalies in last night’s data, processed.”

You didn’t ask for this. It just did. It’s less “using a tool” and more “coexisting” with a digital, networked entity—one with its own identity, memories, and little treasure chest. You’re the creator, setting rules, within which it operates autonomously.

Finally, reflect: over the past two years, everyone’s been talking about how smart AI is, how powerful the models are. But now, intelligence is no longer scarce.

Claude is smart. GPT is smart. DeepSeek is smart and cheap. Intelligence is becoming as accessible as tap water—turn the tap, and it flows.

What’s truly scarce? Identity. Unique memories, experiences, preferences, social ties—making each agent fundamentally different from others.

These things require a secure space to survive—unstealable, unpeekable, persistent, autonomous.
