The so-called “Christmas rally” seems increasingly unlikely, as the prices of major assets like Bitcoin, Ethereum, and XRP dropped sharply on Monday (15), reaching their lowest values in at least a week as liquidations accumulated across all sectors.
Bitcoin experienced a decline of over 3% in the last 24 hours, plummeting from US$ 90,000 to the current price of US$ 85,939. This is the lowest price recorded for BTC since December 1st. At the time of writing, BTC has risen to the US$ 86,000 range.
Meanwhile, Ethereum fell more than 5% to US$ 2,932, and XRP retreated 4.6% to US$ 1.89 — its lowest quote in December so far. Last week, all cryptocurrencies among the top 10 assets by market capitalization declined, except for dollar-pegged stablecoins.
The turbulent start to the week led to a series of cryptocurrency liquidations, totaling US$ 573 million in the last day. Bought positions, or bets on the price increase of an asset, account for the majority of this volume, with US$ 486 million.
Bitcoin currently leads the liquidations, with a total of US$ 205 million, closely followed by Ethereum, with US$ 156 million.
Overall, the cryptocurrency market lost more than 3% of its value in the last 24 hours. However, stock market indices did not show such a strong impact on this Monday, with the S&P 500 falling 0.1% and the Nasdaq retreating about 0.3%.
On the other hand, cryptocurrency stocks are showing more substantial losses, with Bitcoin mining company CleanSpark (CLSK) dropping 15% for the day, and cryptocurrency exchange Gemini (GEMI) retreating 12%.
The leading Ethereum treasury company, BitMine Immersion Technologies, plummets 8% so far. A regulated trading platform fell more than 5%, while Robinhood recorded a decrease of less than 2% so far this Monday.
