Spotify Developers Have Stopped Writing Code Since December 2025.. How Are Apps Evolving?

Gustav Söderström, Co-CEO of Spotify, revealed that their top developers haven't written a single line of code since December 2025. Instead, they rely on the internal AI system Honk, built on Claude Code, to generate and deploy code directly into applications without traditional human intervention.

🔹 How does the system work?

While navigating Slack, an engineer can ask Claude to fix a bug or add a feature to the iOS app. Once the task is completed, an updated version is sent to the phone, ready to be integrated into the production environment before the engineer even arrives at the office. If errors occur, the system automatically fixes them.

🔹 Tangible Results

The system has accelerated app development, with Spotify launching over 50 new features in 2025, including AI-powered Prompted Playlists, Page Match for audiobooks, and About This Song.

🔹 Unique Music Data

Spotify is building a music dataset that other AI models cannot access, providing personalized answers to questions like "What’s the best music for working out?" based on geographic location and individual preferences.

🔹 The Future with AI

Söderström believes this step is not the end but just the beginning of using AI in product development.
