OpenAI today announced its decision to acquire Astral Software Inc. Astral is a startup known for its popular Python development tools. The specific terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

Astral’s development tools are written in Rust, a language more complex than Python but also known for its speed. With this performance advantage, Astral has gained millions of developer users. Its main tool, “uv,” functions as a Python package manager, allowing users to download open-source Python packages and integrate them into software projects. Additionally, it caches code after initial installation to save time.

Astral also offers two open-source tools for detecting code quality issues. The first, “Ruff,” is a linter optimized for finding small programming errors, detecting issues that violate style or formatting standards and providing suggestions for fixes. The second, “ty,” identifies code snippets with data type errors during data processing, helping prevent errors before they occur.

OpenAI stated that after the acquisition, Astral’s tools will be maintained and integrated with its Codex program. The Astral team will join OpenAI to support these development efforts. The acquisition is also expected to help Astral create new revenue models. Astral is preparing a cloud-based Python package registry called “Pyx,” similar to an app store for storing application building modules.

Astral founder and CEO Charlie Marsh said in a blog post, “After joining the Codex team, we will continue to develop our open-source tools and improve them for smoother collaboration with Codex. We will expand opportunities and think more broadly about the future of software development.”

This acquisition comes four months after OpenAI’s competitor, Anthropic PBC, acquired Bun, a startup that provides a platform for building and testing JavaScript applications. Anthropic has stated plans to enhance its Claude Codex through Bun.
