Just went down a rabbit hole on Pakistan's currency history and it's actually wild how much the rupee has depreciated over the decades. Back in 1947, right after independence, 1 dollar to PKR was just 3.31, which meant the currency was pretty stable for years. It basically stayed flat through the 1950s and 60s.

But then things started moving. By the mid-70s it had weakened to around 10 PKR per dollar, and honestly that's when the real erosion began. The 80s saw it drifting further, hitting 20 PKR by 1989. Then the 90s hit different - the depreciation accelerated pretty hard. From 1990 onwards it was basically a one-way street downward.

The 2000s were rough too. By 2008 we were already at 81 PKR per dollar. Fast forward to 2018-2019 and it jumped to 139 and then 163. Last couple years have been even crazier - 2022 saw it spike to 240, 2023 hit 286, and now in 2024 it's sitting around 277.

So yeah, what cost 3.31 rupees in 1947 now costs like 277. That's the dollar story in Pakistan right there. Pretty sobering when you think about what that means for savings and purchasing power over 77 years.
