A senior U.S. defense official (AS) was reported to be in discussions with a number of major companies regarding the potential production of weapons and military equipment. The talks involve automotive manufacturers such as General Motors and Ford Motor, Reuters reported on Thursday (16/04).
The initial discussions, which began before the Iran conflict, took place alongside Donald Trump’s administration’s push for U.S. automakers and manufacturers to play a larger role in producing weapons.
In addition, defense officials said that U.S. manufacturers may be needed to support traditional defense contractors while also determining whether they can quickly shift to military production. The talks also include GE Aerospace, as well as vehicle and engine manufacturer Oshkosh Corporation.
Meanwhile, officials from the U.S. Department of Defense said the government is committed to expanding the defense industrial base by leveraging available technology and commercial solutions to maintain U.S. military superiority.
On the other hand, Donald Trump met with executives from seven defense contractors in March, as the U.S. Department of Defense worked to replenish weapon stocks that were depleted by U.S. strikes on Iran and recent military operations.
