JPMorgan Chase has announced that it will allow its customers to buy Bitcoin. The bank's CEO, Jamie Dimon, announced the decision on its annual investor day, saying, "We're going to let you buy," (Hürriyet, 2025). However, the bank stated that it will not offer custodial services for Bitcoin, but will only record transactions in customer statements. Dimon has been known to be a harsh critic of cryptocurrencies in the past. In 2017, he called Bitcoin a "scam" (Huang 2025). Therefore, this step is seen as a significant shift in the bank's attitude towards digital assets.
The decision is an indication of Bitcoin's acceptance in the mainstream financial world. Other sources state that JPMorgan's move is in line with the growing interest of institutional investors in cryptocurrencies. According to Reuters, the bank aims to gain a competitive advantage with this step, (Reuters, 2025). On the other hand, the decision not to offer custodial services reflects security and regulatory concerns.
