The problems with traditional cloud storage are actually quite easy to understand—storing all data on the servers of a few large companies not only incurs high costs but also risks system-wide failure if something goes wrong.

The Walrus protocol breaks this deadlock. It uses a clever approach with a set of erasure coding algorithms called Red Stuff: intelligently splitting large files like videos and AI datasets into fragments and then dispersing them across decentralized nodes around the world.

There are several impressive aspects of this solution:

First is cost. You don't need to store a complete backup on every node; just retaining the necessary data fragments ensures the file is fully accessible. This directly reduces redundant storage costs.

Second is disaster recovery capability. Even if some storage nodes go offline unexpectedly, the remaining data fragments can still fully restore the original file. Data security is completely assured.

Another highlight is that proof of data availability is recorded on the Sui blockchain. This means there's no need to download the actual files; anyone can verify whether the data exists and is accessible. Such transparency is impossible in traditional storage.

The emergence of Walrus essentially builds a reliable and economical data infrastructure on the high-performance Sui public chain for Web3 applications. For developers and enterprises, they are no longer bound by centralized storage providers and can truly take control of their data destiny.

I have to admit that the erasure coding part has some real value. Compared to traditional cloud storage centralized schemes that cut corners, it's definitely an upgrade. The key is that the costs are lowered, and the Sui ecosystem has been gaining some recent popularity. This wave is really different... right?

Centralized cloud storage is really outrageous; it can crash at any moment, just like gambling.

To be honest, decentralized storage should have been sorted out a long time ago. We've been held back by those AWS folks for too long.

The Redstuff algorithm is truly amazing. The idea of sharded storage should have been thought of long ago.
