The crucial role of Jihan Wu in the technical understanding of Bitcoin in the Chinese market
Jihan Wu, co-founder of the mining company Bitmain and current president of the Matrixport platform, played a key role in the early stages of Bitcoin dissemination in China. His most significant contribution was adapting the original technical document of Bitcoin into Chinese, allowing a broader audience to access the economic and technological fundamentals behind this revolutionary cryptocurrency.
During an interview given in 2019, Jihan Wu explained how his dual academic background in economics and computer science provided him with a unique perspective to interpret and translate complex Bitcoin concepts. At that time, Chinese media presented a predominantly negative view of cryptocurrencies, which generated skepticism and distrust among the general population.
The Chinese version of the Bitcoin Whitepaper, prepared by Jihan Wu, served as a crucial bridge between academic theory and practical understanding by the public. This linguistic adaptation was not merely literal but involved recontextualizing technical terms to make them accessible without sacrificing scientific accuracy. Thanks to this effort, the Chinese community was able to form a more informed and balanced opinion about Bitcoin, independent of the media biases of the moment.
The influence of this work went beyond simple translation. His efforts facilitated the early adoption of Bitcoin among Chinese developers, economists, and entrepreneurs, establishing China as one of the most active markets in cryptocurrencies during the following decade. Jihan Wu demonstrated how access to clear and technically accurate information can transform the perception of an emerging technology in strategic markets.
