GCC Condemns Attack On UAE Consulate In Iraq, Calls It 'Dangerous Escalation'

The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) strongly condemned the ‘blatant attack’ on the UAE’s general consulate in the Kurdistan region of Iraq.

Jassim Mohammed Al Budaiwi, Secretary-General of the GCC, affirmed that this assault constitutes a ‘serious violation’ of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and represents ‘a dangerous escalation’ that threatens the safety and security of diplomats and consulate staff.

The UAE earlier condemned the “unprovoked terrorist drone attack” that targeted the UAE Consulate General in Iraq’s Kurdistan region. The attack resulted in material damage; no injuries were reported, UAE’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

Al Budaiwi emphasised the GCC’s full support and solidarity with the UAE in the wake of the attack, reiterating the council’s rejection of 'all forms of violence and terrorism that jeopardise regional security and stability. ’

The State of Qatar also expressed its strong condemnation of the attack. In a statement carried by Qatar News Agency (QNA), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs called the act 'a flagrant violation of international customs and covenants that guarantee the protection of diplomatic missions and their premises. ’

The ministry renewed Qatar’s firm position rejecting all acts of violence that undermine security and stability, affirming its solidarity with the UAE and its support for all that contributes to enhancing security and stability in the Republic of Iraq and the region.

Similarly, Kuwait’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the attack, describing it as a clear violation of the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, the 1963 Vienna Convention on Consular Relations, and other relevant international agreements, in a statement carried by the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA).

Saudi Arabia also strongly condemned the assault. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the ‘repeated targeting of diplomatic premises’ as a violation of international laws and norms, including the Fourth Geneva Convention of 1949, and stressed the importance of respecting the inviolability of diplomatic missions. The Saudi Press Agency (SPA) quoted the ministry as expressing Saudi Arabia’s solidarity with the UAE.
