1.2 Seconds of Apple Revenue: Apple Fined Less Than $20,000 in Brazil for Not Including Charger with iPhone Purchases
IT Home, February 25 — On February 24, local time, the consumer protection agency Procon-AL in Alagoas, Brazil, fined Apple Brazil 101,627.50 reais (IT Home note: approximately 136,074 RMB at current exchange rates) for not including a power adapter with the iPhone packaging.
This is the fourth penalty issued by Brazilian regulators regarding this issue since 2020, but the fine has been reduced to a symbolic level for the first time.
The initial fine was set at 60,976.50 reais (about 15,005 RMB), but it was gradually increased due to aggravating factors such as “Apple not correcting the issue,” reaching the current amount of 101,627.50 reais (approximately $19,800).
The regulatory agency cited Brazil’s Consumer Protection Law, stating that chargers are essential accessories, and their absence forces consumers to make additional purchases.
Previously, Brazil fined Apple 10.5 million reais (about $2 million at the time) in 2021 for the same reason, and 12.27 million reais (about $2.3 million) in 2022.
Based on Apple’s fiscal year 2026 Q1 total revenue of $143.8 billion, this fine is only equivalent to about 1.2 seconds of its global revenue, or roughly 464 of the 200W USB-C chargers sold in Brazil (priced at 219 reais each).
Apple can file an administrative appeal within 20 days, but legal costs may exceed the amount of the fine itself. Since 2020, when Apple canceled the included charger for environmental reasons, the company has refused to compromise with Brazilian regulators and has not responded to this penalty.
