A retest is the first step of a successful trader

Abstract generation in progress

A retest is a repeated return of the price to a level that was just broken. It is one of the most reliable moments to enter a position. Instead of trying to catch the price at the breakout itself, experienced traders wait for the retest. Why? Because a retest gives you a second chance with much better entry conditions and clearer confirmation of the trend direction.

How a retest works in the market

When the price breaks through an important level, it often then returns to it. This return occurs because a significant volume of trading accumulates at each level. If the price moves higher and then reverses back, it indicates that there is serious supply or demand still influencing the price behavior.

Levels act like magnets—they attract the price back again and again. A retest is not just a random movement but a pattern that repeats constantly. It appears on all timeframes: from five-minute charts to daily and even weekly. Whether you are trading crypto, stocks, or forex, the principle remains the same.

Retest on different timeframes

The feature of a retest is its universality. Every price pattern, every formation, every technical structure contains an element of retesting. There are no exceptions. It is a fundamental market law that works regardless of the chosen timeframe.

Critical levels serve as points of attraction for the price, and their role is the same everywhere: on the hourly chart, the four-hour chart, or the daily chart. These levels determine not only entry points but also psychological points where most traders make buy or sell decisions.

Patience as a strategy: waiting for the retest

Practicing patience to wait for a retest develops the most important skill for a trader—patience itself. Instead of rushing to open a position at the breakout, you learn to wait for a more favorable entry. A retest is your opportunity to observe, confirm the strength of the move, and enter with much greater confidence.

Of course, trading on the breakout also has its right to exist and can be profitable. But statistics show that retests offer a better risk-to-reward ratio. When the price returns to the level and bounces off in the right direction, it signals that the move is indeed serious and has the potential to continue.

Mastering the retest method will help you see the market in a completely different way. Instead of chaotic price movements, you will begin to see structure, logic, and recurring patterns. And most importantly—you will understand why a retest is not just a technical tool but the foundation of a professional trading approach.
