Pillow Test | Consumer Council: Memory Foam and Latex Pillows Are More Durable
The Consumer Council tested 13 pillow samples on the market and found that most performed well overall. All samples passed fire resistance and flame retardant content tests, with satisfactory results.
The 13 pillow samples ranged in price from HKD 79.9 to HKD 1,688, including 7 memory foam pillows, 3 latex pillows, and 3 polyester fiber pillows. The tests showed that most pillows provided better support for larger body types, whether lying on the back or side. However, for slimmer individuals, back support was generally average, with one polyester fiber pillow having a smaller contact area with the head, very quick and large sinking, and the lowest comfort score.
Polyester Fiber Pillows Perform Slightly Less Well and May Need Frequent Replacements
Regarding durability, the tests found that memory foam and latex pillows are more durable, while the generally lower-priced polyester fiber pillows performed less well and may need to be replaced more frequently.
In terms of moisture absorption, the relative humidity of the samples ranged from 48.5% to 66.9%. Two memory foam pillow samples had higher relative humidity, at 59.1% and 66.9%.
Recommend In-Store Personal Testing Before Purchase
The Consumer Council suggests consumers personally test pillows in-store before buying. Avoid choosing pillows that are too hard, as they may have a small contact area with the head, causing pressure on certain parts. When selecting softer pillows, ensure they provide adequate support. If the pillow is too high, it should not be used. If the pillow is too low, you can add a towel underneath and gradually increase the height until it fits comfortably.
