Viatris settles lawsuit over use of woman's 'immortal' cells to power drug research

Generic drugmaker Viatris has settled a lawsuit with the family of Henrietta Lacks over the unauthorized use of her cells in medical research. Lacks’ family accused Viatris of misusing her “HeLa” cells for drug testing without permission. This settlement adds to previous agreements her estate reached with Novartis and Thermo Fisher Scientific regarding the commercial use of her ‘immortal’ cells.
