The two-dollar fare discount will be adjusted to “two dollars at half price” starting from the 3rd of next month. Fares for trips costing 10 dollars or less will remain at 2 dollars, while trips over 10 dollars will be charged at half price.

Legislative Council Welfare Affairs Committee Chairman Paul Chan Mo-po said on a radio program that the generally affected people can accept the new arrangement, and the voices are not very loud. Hong Kong faces structural demographic issues, coupled with recent fiscal deficits, so early action is necessary. He also hopes that after this change, the government will not make further moves in the short term.

DAB Legislative Council member Chan Hak-fung stated that many elderly people have opinions about the change, especially residents of the Outlying Islands. Many seniors also help care for their grandchildren to release productivity, but they are worried that reduced travel might affect their mental and physical health.
