Middle East conflict paralyzes international air traffic

Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East are creating a domino effect on global transportation systems. In recent days, Iranian airstrikes have forced numerous regions to close their airspace, causing international air traffic to undergo significant deviations and unprecedented delays.

Nakhchivan and New Airspace Restrictions

Last Thursday, drone attacks originating from Iran struck the Nakhchivan region in Azerbaijan, leading to an immediate closure of southern Azerbaijani airspace. According to Flightradar24, a well-known flight tracking platform, there was massive congestion in an air corridor over 100 kilometers long in northern Azerbaijan. This restriction is one of many limitations severely constricting Eurasian flight routes.

Deviated Routes and Rising Costs

Global air traffic now faces the need to bypass three critical zones simultaneously. Since Ukraine fell under Russian invasion in 2022, Western airlines had already eliminated overflights of Russian airspace. Now, restrictions on Iran and Iraq have been added, forcing aircraft to take significantly longer alternative routes. Flights must choose between southern or northern detours, greatly extending flight distances.

These route changes have tangible consequences for worldwide air transport. Longer paths lead to increased fuel consumption, extended flight times, and more complex capacity management.
