Recently, I saw someone discussing "Sun Gua," a nickname that really resonates in the crypto world. Speaking of Sun Yuchen, this guy's life trajectory is truly legendary and quite controversial.
Born in Qinghai in 1990, he entered university in 2007 through Peking University’s admission policy with lower scores, then went to the U.S. for further studies and received funding from Lee Teng-hui. He started getting involved in Bitcoin in 2012, quickly earning tens of millions and completing his initial capital accumulation. At that time, he was just a young man, but he already sensed the opportunities in the crypto world.
What really made him famous was the wave of operations in 2014. He began creating various virtual titles—"Buffett Alumni," "Pennsylvania University Top Student," "Tesla Investor," "Holder of 1,000 Bitcoins," and so on. In 2015, he became the only post-90s student in the first batch of students at Lakehouse University, dubbed "Jack Ma’s youngest disciple," and the same year, he was listed among Forbes’ 30 Under 30 entrepreneurs. At that time, he was at the peak of his fame.
In 2017, he founded TRON, a public blockchain project that was accused of code plagiarism but still became one of the world's top three public chains. The operation in 2018 was what truly earned him the nickname "Sun Gua"—selling 6 billion TRX at a high price, earning 12 billion yuan overnight. This move made him the "Jia Yueting of the crypto world," and he quickly moved to the U.S. to operate TRON. He is also a major private holder of Ethereum, with assets growing from tens of millions to hundreds of billions.
The famous Warren Buffett lunch event in 2019 saw him spend 30 million yuan to buy the chance to dine with Buffett, but he repeatedly canceled. This incident drew global attention, helping him break into the mainstream but also leaving Buffett with a poor impression of Chinese entrepreneurs. Around the same time, he was also cashing out TRX, making hundreds of millions in profit. This move further cemented his "Sun Gua" persona.
In 2022, to evade U.S. sanctions, he spent $100 million to obtain Grenadian citizenship and serve as a diplomatic ambassador, gaining diplomatic immunity. He also met with representatives from Singapore, Russia, and the European Union.
Now, at 33, Sun Yuchen is a billionaire, regarded as a "crypto legend," and even claims to run for U.S. president. TRON (TRX) is currently trading around $0.32. This person is indeed complex—possessing business vision, controversial operations, capable of creating wealth, and sparking debates. That’s how the crypto world is; figures like Sun Yuchen always manage to stir discussion.
