OpenClaw faces "rate limiting," and Anthropic charges extra for third-party tool calls to Claude
Cointelegraph 4月4日 news: Anthropic announced an adjustment to its billing policy. Starting at 3:00 PM U.S. Eastern Time on April 4, existing Claude subscription services will no longer cover the usage quota for calls made through third-party access tools. This means that when calling the Claude model through proxy platforms such as OpenClaw, you must use a separate “pay-as-you-go” model, bearing additional base usage costs.
Boris Cherny, an executive overseeing Anthropic’s Claude Code business, explained that the current monthly subscription model was designed without taking into account high-frequency, high-consumption calling scenarios such as those involving third-party tools. With computing resources becoming increasingly tight, the company must implement strict resource management, prioritizing service experiences for its own native products and legitimate API customers. Cherny emphasized that carefully managing the pace of growth is the necessary path to maintaining long-term service sustainability.
To ensure a smooth transition, Anthropic has introduced a number of compensation measures: it will provide existing subscribers with a one-time credit amount equal to their monthly fee. Users can also purchase discounted data bundles or continue using third-party tools via API keys. Users who do not accept the rule changes may apply for a full refund.
