The State Administration of Foreign Exchange released the 2025 year-end data on China’s total external debt on an all-coverage basis. As of the end of 2025, China’s total external debt balance on an all-coverage basis was 16.37T yuan. By the maturity structure, the balance of medium- and long-term external debt was 9.26T yuan, accounting for 44%; the balance of short-term external debt was 2.56T yuan, accounting for 56%. Within the balance of short-term external debt, trade-related credit accounted for 39%. By institutional sector, the balance of broad government external debt was 743.8B yuan, accounting for 16%; the balance of external debt of the central bank was 7438 billion yuan, accounting for 4%; the balance of external debt of banks was 6.56T yuan, accounting for 40%; and the balance of external debt of other sectors was 6.51T yuan, accounting for 40%.
