Chinese Government Middle East Issue Special Envoy Zhai Jun Meets with Arab League Secretary-General Gheit

On March 17, 2026, Chinese Government Special Envoy for Middle East Issues Zhai Jun met in Cairo with Gait, Secretary-General of the Arab League. Gait said that the Arab League is deeply concerned about the dramatic changes in the Middle East situation and the rapid escalation of regional crises. Iran should actively respond to calls from the international community, stop attacks on Gulf Arab countries, ensure the safe and smooth passage of the Strait of Hormuz, and avoid disrupting international trade and regional oil exports. The Arab League appreciates China’s position of advising and promoting dialogue, and hopes that China will continue to play a positive role by taking creative initiatives to push the relevant parties to immediately cease hostilities and return to the correct track of dialogue and negotiations. Zhai Jun said that China extends its sincere sympathy for the suffering caused by the fighting, which has spread to multiple Arab countries and resulted in civilian casualties, and supports the legitimate demands of Arab countries to safeguard their own security and defend their lawful rights. The top priority is to stop fighting and cease hostilities, and all responsible countries in the international community should urge the parties concerned to immediately halt military operations. The Arab League has long been committed to safeguarding peace and stability in the Middle East and plays an important role in regional and international affairs. China is willing to work with the Arab League to actively do work among the relevant parties and make unremitting efforts to help bring about regional peace and stability.
