HSBC's new CFO for Asia and the Middle East, formerly a Shenzhen worker.

Ask AI · How does Yang Xiaowu’s career trajectory help in the new CFO role?

According to a March 25 report by Bloomberg, HSBC Holdings (00005.HK) has appointed Jack Yang as Chief Financial Officer (CFO) for Asia and the Middle East.

He will succeed Ming Lau in the role. Lau has left HSBC to join Canada’s insurance giant Manulife Financial-S (00945.HK).

There were reports as early as November last year that Manulife Financial had appointed Ming Lau as Asia CFO, with the term taking effect in May 2026.

Bloomberg reported that an HSBC spokesperson confirmed the appointment of Jack Yang, but it still requires approval from the regulators. The appointment will take effect on April 13.

Public records show that Jack Yang joined HSBC in 2009. Before that, he held multiple senior roles, including Head of Transaction and Treasury Risk Management for the Asia-Pacific region, Co-Head of Global Transaction Risk, and Chief Risk Officer of HSBC Qianhai Securities.

He is fluent in Mandarin, Cantonese, and English. He is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) charterholder, with extensive experience in the financial services industry across international markets including Hong Kong, mainland China, Canada, and Singapore.

Before being promoted to CFO for Asia and the Middle East at HSBC, Jack Yang was HSBC’s Asia, Middle East and IWPB (International Wealth Management and Premier Wealth Management) Treasury head.

It is worth noting that at the 2025 annual equity analyst conference held by HSBC late on March 6, Jack Yang still appeared in the above capacity.

In addition, following the completion of Hang Seng Bank’s privatization, the bank has welcomed its first foreign CFO. This month, Jonathon Lee, Head of Finance Control for HSBC Asia and the Middle East, has been reassigned to serve as Chief Financial Officer at Hang Seng Bank.

Temporarily replacing Jonathon Lee, it is said to be Su Xuebing, who has worked as Chief Financial Officer at Hang Seng for more than three years and previously served as CFO of HSBC China.
