According to Bloomberg, the Irish government launched the digital wallet testing phase on April 4, which includes an age verification feature that can be used to verify the age of social media users to enhance online safety protections for minors. According to a statement from Ireland's Department of Public Expenditure and Reform, this digital identity wallet will also support storing digital versions of birth certificates, driver's licenses, and other official documents. Previously, Australia began banning social media accounts for users under 16 in January this year; as the EU headquarters of tech giants like Meta, Ireland is also exploring further restrictions on teenage use of social platforms.
