After the elderly travel discount was changed to the “Two Dollars, Two Discounts” scheme, MTR Bus Corporation (KMB) had a fare rebate machine malfunction, resulting in an incorrect calculation of the elderly fares. This effectively made some elderly passengers able to ride for free. A night later, after one evening, some services had returned to normal.

The Secretary for Labour and Welfare, Dr. Sun Yuk-han, emphasized that neither the elderly nor the government had suffered any losses. He said that the additional rebates arising from this incident would be borne entirely by KMB itself.

Sun Yuk-han said that yesterday the Transport Department worked through the night to require KMB to find out why this flaw had occurred, and then submit a report. He said he understood that it had already been adjusted this morning, and that Transport Department colleagues had tested it and that the adjustments had been made.

Sun Yuk-han hoped that residents would feel reassured that no public funds would be lost. This includes passengers using the LeYue card, who have also suffered no losses. Some show that the rebates are more than expected, but in fact there is no loss, and the authorities will handle this matter carefully.
