Microsoft will invest $10 billion in Japan for artificial intelligence infrastructure and cybersecurity development.
Microsoft plans to invest $10 billion in Japan over the next four years, building AI infrastructure together with partners, and strengthening cybersecurity measures.
The U.S. tech giant said Friday that the investment plan is intended to help Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Takase strengthen the country’s economic security and support its goals of driving growth investments in cutting-edge technology fields.
Microsoft said it will work with Internet service provider SoftBank Group and Sakura Network to explore co-developing AI services, supporting the development of Japan-based large language models and other applications. The partners plan to build a platform in Japan for data computation and storage, while allowing customers to access these platforms through Microsoft Azure cloud services.
Microsoft said it will deepen its cooperation with Japan’s Cybersecurity Bureau to help the government and enterprises detect and proactively prevent cyberattacks as early as possible. In addition, Microsoft also announced that it will work with Japanese companies to train 1 million engineers and developers in Japan by 2030.
Just days before this announcement, Microsoft revealed its investment plans for Singapore and Thailand.
Earlier this week, Microsoft said that as demand for AI computing capacity continues to grow, it will invest $5.5 billion in Singapore by 2029 for building cloud services and AI infrastructure. The U.S. tech giant also plans to invest more than $1 billion in Thailand over the next two years.
