Anthropic's new policy implemented: Additional charges for third-party tools like OpenClaw calling Claude

Abstract generation in progress

Due to Anthropic rolling out new policy changes, the cost for users to use OpenClaw on its Claude AI will increase significantly.

According to an email sent to users by Anthropic on Friday night (April 3), starting from 3:00 p.m. Eastern Time on Friday (April 4), “users will no longer be able to use Claude subscription credits to run third-party tools, including OpenClaw.”

If users want to use OpenClaw in combination with Claude, they will need to choose the “pay-as-you-go” option, and the related fees will be calculated separately from Claude subscription costs.

Anthropic’s move may be intended to encourage subscription users to rely more on its own tools, such as Claude Cowork.

Pressure from OpenClaw

Earlier this year, OpenClaw quickly gained popularity, as users said the AI agent can efficiently handle tasks such as managing an inbox, a calendar, and even booking flights. But evidently, this has also put pressure on Anthropic’s AI tools.

According to Boris Cherny, the head of development for the Anthropic Claude Codex project, starting at 12:00 p.m. Pacific Time on April 4, a Claude subscription will no longer cover the use of third-party tools such as OpenClaw. Users can still use these tools through additional usage plans (currently offered at a discount) or by using Claude API keys.

In response, OpenClaw’s creator Peter Steinberger said that he and OpenClaw board member Dave Morin “tried to persuade Anthropic to act rationally, but the most we could do was push it back by a week.”

Cherny, meanwhile, pointed out that “we’ve been working hard to meet the growing demand for Claude products, and our subscription service isn’t suited to the usage patterns of these third-party tools. We manage our resources very carefully and prioritize customers who use our products and APIs.”

“We want to be intentional in how we manage growth so that we can continue to serve customers over the long term. This change is a step toward that direction,” Cherny said.

Cherny also added that after the policy change, “we will still provide subscription users with a one-time allowance, equivalent to their monthly plan cost.”
