According to U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, the temporary tariff exemption imposed by the Trump administration on consumer electronics products such as smartphones and computers is expected to end soon.

In an interview on the This Week program aired on ABC today, Lutnick stated that smartphones, laptops, and other important consumer electronics products were temporarily exempt from high import tariffs earlier this month, but this exemption will never be permanent.

Lutnick said, “All these products will fall under semiconductors and will have a special focus customs tariff to ensure the re-supply of these products.”

Lutnick added that new tariffs targeting semiconductors and electronic components are expected to be implemented next month and that additional customs duties on pharmaceuticals will follow this within one to two months.

The main objective of the administration is to support domestic production in sectors vital for national security, including chip manufacturing and flat panel production. Lutnick stated, “We need chips, we need flat panels, we need them to be produced in America.”

These statements came a few days after the U.S. Customs and Border Protection issued a bulletin late Friday confirming the temporary exemption from mutual tariffs on a number of electronic products announced by President Donald Trump at the beginning of the month.
