Governor Gavin Newsom just announced the California Breakthrough Project – an initiative to reform the efficiency of state government operations, with the participation of leaders from Ripple, Coinbase, MoonPay, and many other major tech companies.

This working group will meet for the first time in June 2025 at Ripple’s headquarters in San Francisco, including representatives from Instacart, Snapchat, Anduril, and investor Ron Conway. The goal is to collaborate with state agencies to implement advanced technology, streamline processes, shorten processing times, and optimize public resource management.

Governor Gavin NewsomThis move comes after California passed bill AB 1052, aimed at establishing a clearer legal framework for the blockchain and digital asset industry. While the specific role of blockchain has not yet been announced, officials expect the rapidly growing cryptocurrency industry in the state – home to nearly 1/4 of North America’s blockchain companies – will play an important role.

The initiative also aims to increase transparency, ensure public service ethics, and set a precedent for innovation in the governance system, in the context of the U.S. Congress intensifying discussions on cryptocurrency legislation during “Crypto Week.”
