Vitalik: I hope ZK and FHE researchers provide computational efficiency ratios rather than just computation speed.

ETH-1,29%

Foresight News reported that Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin expressed hope that more researchers on zero-knowledge proofs (ZK) and fully homomorphic encryption (FHE) would provide the time ratio between encrypted computation and raw computation, which is the ratio of encrypted computation time to raw computation time, rather than just providing the number of operations that can be performed per second (N ops). This ratio is more hardware-independent and can provide more valuable information: how much efficiency I sacrifice when using encryption technology instead of relying on trust. Furthermore, for developers, such a ratio is easier to estimate because they usually already know the time required for raw computation and can directly perform multiplication. Although he acknowledged that this is difficult, as the required operations are heterogeneous between execution and proof, especially in terms of SIMD/parallelization and memory access patterns, therefore even the ratio somewhat depends on the hardware, he believes that despite these shortcomings, the overhead factor is still a valuable metric.
