Leading AI company OpenAI acquires healthcare technology startup “Torch Health,” officially entering the medical AI market. This acquisition is part of the ChatGPT healthcare expansion strategy, aiming to integrate and analyze personal health data and deliver insights through ChatGPT.
OpenAI plans to address inefficiencies in medical settings caused by data fragmentation through Torch, established in 2024. Torch is developing an AI-powered health application that can collect dispersed information from hospitals, diagnostic agencies, and personal health records, reconstructing it into a unified interactive interface. The app can comprehensively organize prescriptions, diagnostic results, treatment history, as well as unstructured data such as voice memos or medical summaries.
In an official statement, OpenAI previewed: “The integration of Torch and ChatGPT Health will open new ways for users to gain deeper understanding and management of their own health.” Although the acquisition amount has not been disclosed, The Information reports it to be approximately 144 billion KRW (USD 100 million), while CNBC estimates around 87 billion KRW (USD 60 million).
With its AI summarization and pattern recognition capabilities, Torch transforms complex medical data into easily understandable formats, expanding its potential user base from general consumers to healthcare professionals. OpenAI appears to recognize this potential and has decided to invest, seeing the next-generation applications of ChatGPT. This aligns with the new “ChatGPT Health” feature released by OpenAI last week, which is expected to support interpreting user test results, creating personalized exercise plans, and recommending questions for medical consultations.
Industry experts believe this acquisition will become a pivotal turning point in OpenAI’s healthcare strategy. Leveraging Torch’s technological strength and data accessibility, OpenAI can enhance the credibility and accuracy of healthcare platforms. In the long term, this also opens possibilities for collaborations with hospitals and medical data platforms.
Torch stated on its official website: “We founded the company with the goal of building an AI medical memory bank,” and “Joining OpenAI allows us to realize our vision of health data integration on a larger scale.”
Against the backdrop of AI technology permeating daily life, health tech has become one of the most focused next-generation growth areas for tech companies. OpenAI’s move can be seen as an extension of its strategic layout, representing not just an improvement in ChatGPT features but also a strategic step toward personalized health management services.
