January 14 News, BNB Chain has officially activated the Fermi hard fork upgrade, resulting in a significant increase in block generation speed. After the upgrade, the time to generate a single block was shortened from 0.75 seconds to approximately 0.45 seconds, nearly doubling the on-chain transaction confirmation efficiency. This means that under high load conditions, transfers and decentralized application operations will be smoother, and latency issues will be alleviated.

However, the Fermi upgrade is not the end but an important starting point for BNB Chain towards 2026. Nina Rong, Executive Director of Growth at BNB Chain, publicly stated that the team is planning the next-generation high-performance transaction chain, aiming for near-instant confirmation, long-term stable high throughput, and a hybrid architecture combining on-chain and off-chain computing. This direction is seen as the core pillar of BNB Chain’s future scalability.

From a technical positioning perspective, BNB Chain is trying to find a balance between decentralization, security, and user experience. On one hand, maintaining developer choice; on the other, providing an experience close to Web2 standards, and designing more flexible migration paths for developers. This approach also reflects the ongoing intensification of Layer 1 public chain competition in 2026.

In terms of performance, the upgraded BNB Chain has entered the first tier of “sub-second block production,” directly contrasting with high-performance public chains like Solana. Regarding costs, BNB Chain has previously significantly reduced transaction fees. Although current fee levels still have gaps, overall competitiveness is improving. For DeFi, blockchain games, and high-frequency interactive applications, stability and predictable performance are becoming key considerations.

From market performance observations, at the beginning of 2026, the price trajectories of BNB and SOL diverged. In the short term, SOL’s rebound was slightly higher, but BNB had already accumulated a strong gain in the previous cycle. Multiple factors combined, and the price differences more reflect stage-specific capital preferences rather than a single technical conclusion.

Overall, the Fermi upgrade is more like a “cornerstone project” for BNB Chain’s 2026 roadmap. Its true value still depends on subsequent infrastructure deployment, developer adoption rates, and ecosystem application growth to be validated.

Perp DEX Becomes Largest Battlefield on Blockchain, Derivatives Volume 10 Times Spot Trading Sparks Competition

Cryptocurrency derivatives trading volume has significantly surpassed spot trading, making perpetual futures decentralized exchanges (Perp DEX) a core battleground for blockchains. Major public chains including BNB Chain's Aster, Aptos's Decibel, and Hyperliquid have begun deploying Perp DEX to enhance liquidity and trading environments. However, liquidity tends to concentrate among a few dominant platforms. In the future, platforms offering unique yields may emerge as long-term winners.
