In this world where efficiency is king and disruptive technology creates billion-dollar markets overnight, companies inevitably see generative artificial intelligence as a powerful ally.

From OpenAI’s ChatGPT generating human-like text to DALL-E generating artworks based on prompts, we have glimpsed into the future where machines not only collaborate with us in creation, but may even lead innovation.

So, why not extend it to the research and development (R&D) field? After all, artificial intelligence can accelerate the generation of ideas, iterate faster than human researchers, and may even easily discover the next “hot product”, right?

In theory, all of this sounds good, but in reality, relying on artificial intelligence to take over research and development work is likely to backfire, and may even have disastrous consequences.

Whether it’s an early-stage startup pursuing development or a veteran company defending its turf, the task of outsourcing innovation work is a risky game.

While embracing new technologies, people may lose the essence of truly groundbreaking innovation, and even worse, may drag the entire industry into a death spiral of homogenized and uncreative products.

Let’s analyze why excessive reliance on artificial intelligence in research and development can become a fatal weakness for innovation.

01.AI’s “mediocre genius”: prediction ≠ imagination

Artificial intelligence is essentially a powerful prediction machine. Based on a large number of historical precedents, it predicts the most suitable text, images, designs, or code snippets, and thus creates.

Although this looks efficient and complex, we need to be clear: the ability of AI is limited to its training data. It is not truly “creative” in the real sense, nor does it engage in disruptive thinking.

In other words, AI looks backwards and relies entirely on things that have already been created. In the process of research and development, this becomes a fundamental flaw rather than a feature.

To truly open up new horizons, it takes more than incremental improvements inferred from historical data.

Great innovations often come from leaps, turns, and reimaginations, rather than slight variations on existing themes. Think about how companies like Apple with the iPhone or Tesla in the electric car industry have improved upon existing products.

Obviously, they have all disrupted the existing model.

GenAI may continue to improve the design sketches of the next generation of smartphones, but it will not conceptually liberate us from smartphones themselves.

Bold, world-changing moments, those moments that redefine markets, behavior, and even industries, all come from human imagination, not algorithmically calculated probabilities.

When artificial intelligence becomes the driving force of research and development, the ultimate result is a better iteration of existing ideas, rather than the next revolutionary breakthrough.

The essence of artificial intelligence is homogenization

One of the biggest dangers of letting artificial intelligence control the product ideation process is that the way AI handles content can lead to convergence rather than divergence, whether in design, solutions, or technical configurations.

Due to the overlapping of training data, AI-driven development will lead to the homogenization of products in the entire market.

Perhaps there will be some slight changes in product performance, but essentially it is still the same concept with different “flavors”.

Imagine this: you now have four competitors, all using AI systems to design the user interface (UI) of their phones.

Each system is trained on roughly the same information corpus, which is collected from online data about consumer preferences, existing designs, best-selling products, etc.

Obviously, this will result in very similar generated results.

Over time, people will see a disturbing visual and conceptual cohesion, and competitors’ products begin to imitate each other.

Of course, the icons may be slightly different, and the product features may also have subtle differences, but what about the essence, characteristics, and uniqueness? Soon, they will vanish into thin air.

We have seen early signs of this phenomenon in AI-generated art.

On platforms like Art Station, many artists express concerns about the influx of AI-generated content, as these contents not only fail to showcase human’s unique creativity, but also give a sense of repetitive use of popular culture references, generic visual patterns, and aesthetic styles. This is not the cutting-edge innovation that people want to drive development.

If every company treats generative AI as its de facto innovation strategy, then the industry will not have five or ten disruptive new products every year, but only five or ten revamped clone products.

03.The “Magic” of Humans: How Does Accident Drive Innovation?

History tells us that penicillin was discovered by Alexander Fleming when he accidentally forgot to cover the bacterial culture dish. The microwave was invented when engineer Percy Spencer stood too close to a radar device and accidentally melted a piece of chocolate. Even the invention of Post-it notes was a byproduct of a failed attempt to create a super-strong adhesive.

In fact, failure and unexpected discoveries are an indispensable part of research and development.

Human researchers have a unique sense of perception of the value hidden in failures, and they often see accidents as opportunities.

Coincidence, intuition, instinct, these are all key to successful innovation, just like any carefully crafted R&D roadmap.

But the crux of generative AI is that it has no concept of “fuzziness,” let alone the ability to flexibly understand “failure” as a kind of wealth.

The programming of artificial intelligence teaches it to avoid errors, optimize accuracy, and solve data ambiguity. This is good for simplifying logistics or increasing factory output, but it is a fatal flaw in breakthrough exploration.

However, the crux of generative AI lies here: it has no concept of “ambiguity,” let alone the flexibility to understand “failure” as a form of wealth.

Humans embrace complexity and are adept at finding possibilities from unexpected outputs.

AI will only double down on certainty, incorporating moderate ideas into the mainstream and rejecting anything that seems irregular or untested.

04. Artificial intelligence lacks empathy and foresight

Innovation is not only the result of logic, but also of empathy, intuition, desire, and foresight.

The reason why humans innovate is not just about logical efficiency or bottom line, but also about responding to subtle human needs and emotions.

We dream of making things faster, safer, and more enjoyable, because fundamentally, we understand the human experience.

Think about the design of the first generation iPod or the minimalist interface of Google search. The reason why these game-changing designs have been successful is not purely due to technical superiority, but because we can empathize with the dissatisfaction of users with complex MP3 players or chaotic search engines.

The next generation of AI cannot replicate this.

It doesn’t know what it feels like to wrestle with a buggy application, or to experience the wonder of minimalist design, or the frustration of unmet needs.

When AI “innovates”, it does so without an emotional context. This lack of vision undermines AI’s ability to come up with ideas that resonate with humans.

What’s even worse is that without empathy, products created by artificial intelligence may be technically impressive, but they lack soul, vitality, and humanity, which means they lack humanity.

In the field of research and development, this is the killer of innovation.

05. Over-reliance on AI may lead to skill degradation

For AI enthusiasts, the last chilling thought is: what will happen if AI intervenes too much?

It is obvious that in any field where automation erodes human involvement, skills will degrade over time.

Just look at the industries that introduced automation early on and you’ll see that employees lost their understanding of the ‘why’ behind things because they didn’t regularly exercise their problem-solving abilities.

In the environment of heavy research and development, this poses a real threat to shaping a long-term culture of innovation in human capital.

If the research team only becomes the supervisor of the artificial intelligence generated work, they may lose the ability to challenge and surpass the output of artificial intelligence.

The less innovative practice, the weaker the ability for independent innovation. When people realize they have lost their balance, it may be too late.

When the market undergoes drastic changes, this erosion of human skills is very dangerous, and no amount of artificial intelligence can lead people through the fog of uncertainty.

The disruptive era requires humans to break conventional frameworks, which is something that artificial intelligence will never be good at.

06. The Road Ahead: Artificial Intelligence is an assistant, not a replacement

The above does not mean that artificial intelligence has no place in the field of research and development. As an auxiliary tool, artificial intelligence can enable researchers and designers to test, iterate creative ideas, and refine details more quickly.

Used properly, it can enhance productivity without suppressing creativity. The key is to ensure that artificial intelligence is a complement to human creativity, not a substitute.

Human researchers need to always be at the center of the innovation process, using artificial intelligence tools to enrich their work, but never handing over the control of creativity, vision, or strategic direction to algorithms.

The era of artificial intelligence has arrived, but we still need the rare and powerful spark of human curiosity and courage, which will never be reduced to machine learning models.
