Trump says it is “very likely” to extend the TikTok ban for 90 days after taking office

The reporter learned on January 18, local time, that US President-elect Trump said in an interview on the same day that he was “very likely” to give TikTok a 90-day ban extension after taking office.

Trump said he has not made a final decision yet, but is considering extending the deadline of January 19 by 90 days, and may announce this decision on January 20.

On January 17th local time, the United States Supreme Court ruled in favor of the ban on short video social media platform TikTok in the United States. TikTok’s application will be removed from the United States as early as the 19th.

On April 24th last year, US President Biden signed a bill passed by both houses of Congress requiring ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, to sell TikTok to non-Chinese companies within 270 days, otherwise the app will be banned in the United States.

TikTok issued a statement: the platform will be forced to shut down on the 19th.

On January 17 local time, short video social media platform TikTok stated that unless the Biden administration “guarantees no enforcement action,” TikTok will be forced to cease operations on the 19th.

TikTok stated on its official website that for more than 170 million American users of TikTok, the technical support provided by internet service providers is crucial. The statement issued earlier by the White House and the US Department of Justice on the 17th failed to provide the necessary clarification and assurance to the technical service providers. Unless the Biden administration immediately provides a clear statement to ensure that no enforcement actions will be taken, thus relieving these critical service providers of their concerns, TikTok will unfortunately be forced to shut down on January 19th.

Analysts pointed out that due to the law stipulating hefty fines for internet service providers who offer technical support to TikTok after the shutdown deadline, and it has retroactive effect. Without explicit government guarantees, no U.S. service provider is willing to risk non-compliance.

The ‘no sale means disable’ law means that TikTok users may still use the app after the 19th, but they cannot download updates from the internet app store, and TikTok cannot host data in the US. Earlier, foreign media reported that if this happens, the company will proactively shut down services to US users after the 19th deadline set by the US government.
