TikTok accused of facilitating fake AI-generated advertisements

TikTok is facing allegations of facilitating fake AI-generated advertisements, as many misleading and harmful content still easily pass through moderation filters. In the context where advertising is a primary revenue source for social media platforms, the explosion of AI content has led to a rapid increase in fraudulent ads on TikTok.

Many advertisements related to weight loss products, GLP-1 patches, or “cure” for belly fat caused by cortisol are being circulated, despite having no medical basis and even impersonating reputable pharmacies. Some ads even direct users to cloned websites with the intent of scamming.

Although TikTok affirms a strict ban on misleading advertisements and has implemented measures to combat health misinformation, fake AI ads continue to appear widely. In response to this situation, EU authorities are calling for enhanced protective measures and strict enforcement of legal frameworks regarding AI usage on social media.
