Anthropic launches Claude for Word, supporting presenting AI modification suggestions in tracked change format, and enabling reading file comments, drafting content from templates, and checking terminology consistency. It completes Anthropic’s three-piece office suite layout with Word, Excel, and PowerPoint integration.

- Four core functions: from reading comments to editing revisions

- Still in beta; legal documents require human review
Anthopic, after adding the Excel and PowerPoint plugins, officially launches Claude for Word, enabling Claude to officially support modifying Word files themselves. “Officially” means Anthropic has completed the final piece of integrating Microsoft Office’s three core apps.
Four core functions: from reading comments to editing revisions
The design logic of Claude for Word is built around one principle: disrupt the user’s existing workflow as little as possible. The specific features are divided into four parts:
- Work through your comments: read the comments inside the document, edit the corresponding anchored text according to instructions, and respond in tracked changes format—reviewers can accept or reject each one individually, so you don’t have AI directly overwriting the original text.
- Draft in your template: draft content within existing templates, automatically carrying over heading styles and project bullet formatting, and you can also reference another uploaded source file; it’s suitable for scenarios where you need to generate drafts by referencing specification documents or contract templates.
- Check for consistency: scan the entire document to flag inconsistent terminology usage, broken cross-references, and numbering errors—especially useful for long files with repeated edits across departments.
- Rewrite what you select: select any paragraph, describe your rewriting request, and Claude will only modify that paragraph, without affecting the style or automatic numbering of other paragraphs.
“Skills” make workflows reusable
Beyond the four basic functions, Claude for Word also includes a design with even more enterprise value—Turn workflows into skills (turn workflows into skills).
Companies can package and save commonly used processes—such as contract clause review, regulatory compliance memo generation, and quarterly report writing formats—into reusable “skills” that can be called on demand. This lets team members who aren’t familiar with how to write prompts execute the entire workflow in one click, without having to describe the requirements from scratch every time.
It’s also worth paying attention to integration across applications. The Word, Excel, and PowerPoint plugins can pass context within the same conversation, meaning you can bring Excel financial numbers directly into a Word memo, or automatically convert a long document into a PowerPoint presentation outline—without copying and pasting and then re-describing everything.
Still in beta; legal documents require human review
At this stage, Claude for Word only supports .docx and .docm (older .doc or .rtf files need to be saved as .docx first), and it’s only available to users of Claude Team and Enterprise plans—there’s no personal version included. At the same time, Anthropic explicitly does not recommend using the current version for final legal documents or highly sensitive data.
The office productivity software market has long been a fiercely contested battleground for tech giants, and Microsoft itself has deeply integrated Copilot across its entire Office suite. Anthropic chose to enter the same ecosystem via plugins, and it clearly emphasizes the scenario of file review—an area where Copilot is relatively weak—so the strategic intent is clear.
